The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini announced the establishment of a special service delivery improvement initiative – Project Mikondzo.
In terms of this initiative, the Department of Social Development, SASSA and National Development Agency (NDA)’s administrative staff will be based in the communities doing fieldwork to ensure that access to services is enhanced and that government is adequately responsive to immediate socio-economic challenges facing our communities.
The name Mikondzo is a Xitsonga name referring to footprints. It refers to the Department’s aim to expand and leave a positive service delivery footprint by bringing all its services to the people. Mikondzo teams have already started working in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, North West and Gauteng.
Project Mikondzo will focus its services delivery improvement interventions on the Department’s five priority areas of early childhood development, child youth development, substance abuse, gender based violence and the strengthening of the non-profit organisation sector.
Mikondzo will be targeted at 1300 wards in 23 district municipalities identified by Cabinet as priority. These municipalities face many identified challenges and other service delivery challenges. This gives the Department with an opportunity to strengthen and improve the impact of its policies and programmes. The project will also be informed by engagements with provincial and municipal authorities, councillors, ward committees, social workers and community development workers who will provide us with first-hand information about the situation on the ground in their various areas.
